News Summary
Students from Ripon High School’s Social Justice Alliance recently returned from an impactful trip to California, focusing on LGBTQ+ advocacy and civil rights. Guided by their advisor, they visited historical sites, engaged with local leaders, and learned about the importance of inclusivity. The experience enriched their understanding of social justice and civic responsibilities, showcasing the stark cultural differences between California and their home state of Wisconsin. Fundraising efforts prior to the trip ensured the participation of twelve students, making this journey both educational and transformative for all involved.
Ripon – The Ripon High School Social Justice Alliance recently returned from a transformative trip to California, where students deepened their understanding of LGBTQ+ advocacy and various civil rights issues. Guided by advisor Brad Roost, the group’s journey included visits to numerous notable sites and interactions with key figures in local governance.
One significant aspect of their trip was a visit to the ONE Archives at the University of Southern California. Here, students engaged with the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community and participated in the organization of archival files. This experience provided a unique practical application of their studies, enhancing their awareness of social justice issues.
The group also had the opportunity to engage with local government leaders by attending a discussion with West Hollywood Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers and council member John Erickson, a former student of Ripon High School. Students learned about the governance of West Hollywood, a city with a population of approximately 35,000, which is significantly larger than Ripon. They gleaned insights into local policies, including the minimum wage in West Hollywood, which is nearly $20 an hour, and the city’s prohibition of fast food restaurants.
Aside from these meetings, the Social Justice Alliance explored various landmark sites, including the Griffith Observatory, Warner Brothers Studios, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Walk of Fame, and the Santa Monica Pier. The visit to the Museum of Tolerance was particularly impactful, where students expanded their understanding of the Holocaust and the lessons it imparts beyond the conventional classroom setting. Additionally, their trip to the African American Museum allowed them to appreciate contemporary art and diverse artistic expressions.
The project aimed to broaden students’ understanding of civil rights, social justice, and civic responsibilities with an emphasis on values such as love, authenticity, and courage. Throughout the journey, students acknowledged the visible acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in California, highlighting a stark contrast to the cultural climate they experience back home in Wisconsin.
Before embarking on this educational venture, the Social Justice Alliance successfully raised $15,000 over a span of 20 months to support the trip. The funds ensured that nearly all costs for the 12 participating students were comprehensively covered. To facilitate this fundraising effort, presentations were made to community organizations, including the League of Women Voters and the Ripon School Board, who were integral in supporting the trip financially.
Students who participated expressed that exposing themselves to diverse communities and experiencing inclusivity in real-world settings was far more profound than any classroom learning. Such engagements fostered a greater sense of acceptance and understanding, vital for nurturing informed and empathetic citizens.
This trip not only served as an educational experience but also as a crucial stepping stone for students in their journey toward becoming advocates for social justice within their own communities.
