Los Angeles, California – Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Eggs Results in Nationwide Recall

Officials are currently investigating a salmonella outbreak that has been connected to eggs distributed in California and Nevada, affecting more than 95 individuals across 14 states. The outbreak was announced on Thursday by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, following the recall of large brown cage-free sunshine yolk eggs by Country Eggs LLC based in Lucerne Valley, California.

The nationwide recall was issued on Wednesday, emphasizing the potential health risks associated with consuming these eggs, branded as Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets. The affected eggs bear the code CA 7695 on the carton, and were distributed from June 16, 2025, to July 9, 2025, in California and Nevada. The sell-by dates for these recalled eggs range from July 1, 2025, to September 18, 2025.

Victims of the outbreak are spread across several states, with California reporting the highest number of confirmed illnesses—73 cases in total. Other states reporting illnesses include Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada, and Washington. Among those affected, 18 individuals have been hospitalized, although there have been no reported deaths related to this outbreak.

Symptoms commonly associated with a salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and body aches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified a significant increase in illnesses linked to the outbreak from mid-June to mid-July, with the first cases dating back to January. It is important to note that many individuals might not seek testing or report their illnesses, contributing to the underreporting of salmonella infections; only 1 in 30 cases are diagnosed.

Salmonella infections typically manifest symptoms within 6 hours to 6 days after consuming contaminated food, with most individuals recovering within 4 to 7 days. High-risk groups include children under 5 years of age, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems, who are more vulnerable to severe complications.

In response to the ongoing outbreak, the FDA has initiated an investigation, leading to the suspension of the affected production. Consumers who have purchased the recalled eggs are strongly encouraged to return them to the point of purchase for a refund or to dispose of them safely.

As this situation develops, health officials are working to trace the source of the contamination and prevent further illnesses. Public awareness and adherence to food safety guidelines are critical in reducing the risk of infection and ensuring the safety of food products. Residents are urged to monitor their health and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with salmonella infection.

The investigation continues to address the implications of this outbreak and to reassure the public about the safety of their food supply. For now, those believed to be at risk or experiencing symptoms are advised to take precautionary measures and consult with healthcare providers.
