Los Angeles – Over 400 guinea pigs were rescued from a hoarding situation in South Los Angeles, prompting local animal rescue groups to urgently seek assistance for the displaced animals. The Southern California Guinea Pig Rescue (SCGPR), along with other partner organizations, is calling for the public to help find homes for these animals after their discovery at a residence on Thursday night.

Upon their visit, SCGPR found that approximately 400 to 500 guinea pigs were being kept in poor conditions. Originally, the landlord had given the tenant until Saturday to either find homes for the guinea pigs or face eviction, but that deadline has since been extended, though the length of the extension remains unclear. Meanwhile, SCGPR is actively seeking partnerships to transport many of the guinea pigs to reputable rescues and sanctuaries across the United States.

During the initial rescue effort, SCGPR, in collaboration with groups like Rescue Garden, Wee Companions Small Animal Adoption in San Diego, and Vegas Friends of Guinea Pigs Rescue, successfully removed 33 guinea pigs from the residence. Their focus was on the most vulnerable animals, including heavily pregnant females, nursing mothers, and those exhibiting health issues. The rescued guinea pigs are currently receiving critical medical care.

The situation became dire as it was reported that the guinea pigs were left behind by a previous tenant who failed to manage breeding controls, resulting in a significant population increase. Female guinea pigs can breed immediately after giving birth, and juveniles must be separated from adults after three to four weeks to prevent further breeding. It has been reported that breeding was occurring during SCGPR’s visit, compounding the issue of overpopulation.

SCGPR has expressed disappointment with the response of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services, which has stated that the animals’ needs are being met despite the conditions observed by the rescue team. LA Animal Services plans to return next week to evaluate the situation further, but has noted that they lack the necessary resources to accommodate such a large group of guinea pigs.

As the situation unfolds, SCGPR and its partners are appealing to the public for help in fostering or adopting the rescued guinea pigs. They are also accepting donations to support the medical care and necessary supplies for the animals that have been taken in. Interested community members can find contact information for SCGPR, Rescue Garden, Wee Companions, and Vegas Friends of Guinea Pigs Rescue to learn how they can assist in the rescue efforts.

This alarming case highlights the critical issues surrounding animal hoarding and overpopulation. The involvement of multiple rescue organizations underscores the community’s commitment to animal welfare and the need for urgent action to ensure the well-being of these guinea pigs. With continued support and outreach, there is hope that these animals can find loving homes and avoid further suffering.
