News Summary

Waymo is expanding its autonomous taxi service area in Los Angeles to over 120 square miles, up from 89 square miles. The new areas include key locations like Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Playa del Rey. The company operates a fleet of electric Jaguar vehicles, providing ride-hailing services since 2020. Safety statistics show a significant reduction in accidents with the autonomous fleet. Waymo also plans to extend services to other major cities and enhance its operations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expansion reflects the company’s commitment to safe and accessible transportation.

Los Angeles – Waymo is taking a significant step forward in the realm of autonomous transportation as it expands its taxi service area in Los Angeles, effective Wednesday. The new service area spans over 120 square miles of Los Angeles County, marking a considerable increase from the previous coverage of 89 square miles.

The newly added service areas in Los Angeles encompass several key locations, including:

  • Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles
  • West Hollywood to Inglewood
  • Playa del Rey
  • Ladera Heights
  • Echo Park
  • Silver Lake
  • Entirety of Sunset Boulevard
  • A route from Mid-City to Inglewood and Westchester via La Cienega Boulevard and La Brea Avenue

Waymo operates a fleet of approximately 100 electric Jaguar vehicles in Los Angeles, which utilize advanced technology such as cameras, sensors, and lidar to navigate the urban landscape autonomously. Since the launch of Waymo One, the company has been providing ride-hailing services, which began in 2020. The service has grown significantly, averaging over 250,000 paid rides each week.

Waymo’s vehicles have not only transformed transportation in Los Angeles but also demonstrated notable safety improvements when compared to traditional vehicles. The autonomous fleet has reported an 81% reduction in airbag deployment crashes, a 78% decrease in injury-causing accidents, and a 62% drop in police-reported crashes. These statistics highlight the potential advantages of self-driving technology in promoting safer roads.

In the past, Waymo had to temporarily halt operations in downtown Los Angeles due to vehicle vandalism linked to protests. Despite this setback, the company remains committed to expanding its services and plans to extend the Waymo One ride-hailing service to other major cities, including Miami, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.

In addition to its Los Angeles expansion, Waymo is also enhancing its operations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The newly included service areas in the Bay Area feature strategic locations such as Silicon Valley, with cities like Palo Alto and Menlo Park, as well as additional areas including Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame.

Overall, Waymo’s vehicles have collectively driven over 30 million miles without human intervention before the latest expansion, further establishing the company’s leadership in the self-driving car industry. Furthermore, Waymo is actively exploring new testing locations, including Las Vegas and San Diego, to refine its autonomous driving capabilities.

Waymo places high importance on inclusivity and community service by partnering with various nonprofits to provide free rides for seniors and individuals with mobility challenges. This initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to making transportation accessible for all.

With the recent expansion in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, Waymo is set to enhance the autonomous transportation landscape significantly while continuing to prioritize safety and accessibility in urban mobility solutions.
