Graduates celebrating at Palisades Charter High School graduation ceremony

News Summary

Seniors from Palisades Charter High School held their graduation ceremony at the Hollywood Bowl, overcoming challenges posed by the devastating fires that impacted their community. The event welcomed 740 graduates who transitioned to temporary learning arrangements following the fires. Notable speakers, including alumni and California’s governor, honored the students’ resilience. As the ceremony concluded, graduates celebrated their achievements, symbolizing hope for the future amidst their struggles.

Los Angeles – On Wednesday, seniors from Palisades Charter High School (Pali High) celebrated their graduation at the Hollywood Bowl, marking a significant milestone following the devastating Palisades Fire in January. This fire had a profound impact, displacing over 2,000 students, damaging the school infrastructure, and affecting many families within the community.

The graduation ceremony, attended by 740 seniors, took place in the iconic Hollywood Bowl, a venue renowned for its storied history that includes performances by legendary artists like the Beatles. While the location was different from the traditional site, known as the Stadium by the Sea, the graduates expressed their honor in celebrating this pivotal moment in their lives at such a prestigious venue.

After the fire, Pali High students transitioned to temporary learning arrangements at an old Sears building in downtown Santa Monica, a move that allowed them to return to in-person education in April. This change came after several months of online learning due to the devastation caused by the fire.

Students voiced their gratitude for the opportunity to be reunited as a class after enduring a challenging period. Many reflected on the emotional weight of their graduation, particularly those who had lost homes and cherished possessions. A sense of bittersweetness was palpable, as graduates acknowledged both their achievements and the memories of their previous graduation site.

The ceremony included notable speakers who recognized the resilience of the graduating class. Steve Kerr, a Pali High alumnus and coach of the Golden State Warriors, addressed the students, emphasizing their perseverance through adversity. Additionally, California Governor Gavin Newsom sent congratulatory remarks via video, further honoring the students’ achievements.

In a surprise gesture, actress Jennifer Coolidge sent off the graduates with encouraging words, while comedian Billy Crystal, a Palisades resident affected by the fire, shared insights on growth through difficult times. Valedictorian Annalisa Hurd delivered a speech inspiring her fellow graduates to embrace life’s unexpected turns.

The ceremony adhered to traditional graduation formats, featuring musical performances and the announcement of graduates’ names. Assistant coach Rashad Rhodes noted the surreal feeling of having the community come together for this celebratory event, marking an important return to normalcy after a trying year.

Principal Pamela Magee played a crucial role in securing a location for the graduation, collaborating with various venues across Los Angeles before the Hollywood Bowl offered to host the event for a reduced fee. The ceremony operated within strict timing to accommodate an upcoming concert, beginning at 3 p.m. and concluding at 6 p.m.

As the ceremony came to a close, graduates tossed their mortarboards into the air, symbolizing not only the culmination of their high school journey but also a collective hope for the future. This graduation served not just as a celebration of academic achievement but also as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Pali High community in the face of adversity.
