Crowds protesting in downtown Los Angeles with visible police presence

News Summary

Protests in downtown Los Angeles escalated into violence as demonstrators opposed federal immigration raids. The situation intensified with vandalism and arson of Waymo taxis, resulting in significant damage. Law enforcement issued warnings and deployed National Guard troops to restore order. Local officials advise caution amid fears of ongoing unrest related to immigration policy.

Los Angeles – Protests in downtown Los Angeles escalated into vandalism and arson on Sunday, as demonstrators voiced their opposition to federal immigration raids initiated by the Trump administration. The protests began in the Civic Center area, where large crowds gathered all day, eventually spilling onto the 101 Freeway and causing significant disruption.

The chaos intensified around 3:30 p.m. when protesters occupied the freeway, prompting the California Highway Patrol to intervene and attempt to disperse the crowds. Multiple detentions occurred during this standoff. By 5 p.m., demonstrators turned their attention to five Waymo autonomous taxis parked on Los Angeles Street, initiating a series of destructive acts.

Protesters slashed the tires, smashed windows, and spray-painted anti-ICE messages on the Waymo vehicles. In a dramatic escalation, three of the taxis were set on fire, producing thick plumes of black smoke that were visible from afar. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as one person used a skateboard to break windows while another ignited the vehicles’ interiors with a makeshift flamethrower. Demonstrators even threw Lime electric scooters into the inferno as the taxis blared their horns in an unsettling dissonance.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the scene to extinguish the flames, while the LAPD issued warnings for people to stay clear of the area due to the toxic gases emitted from the burning lithium-ion batteries of the vehicles. The police department characterized the gathering as an unlawful assembly and further restricted access to Los Angeles Street.

Damage estimates for the vandalized Waymo taxis range from $750,000 to $1 million. Individual taxis hold values of between $150,000 and $200,000, contributing to the high financial toll. Waymo spokespersons confirmed they were in touch with law enforcement regarding the incident and emphasized that the protests were not directly related to the operations of their self-driving taxis.

This unrest was ignited by a multi-day Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in the vicinity, which targeted undocumented individuals. The operation had already heightened tensions throughout the community, leading to the protests. In response to the unrest, President Trump authorized the deployment of California National Guard troops to the area, further amplifying the confrontational atmosphere.

Local officials have urged residents to avoid public spaces due to fears of further protests and potential violence. The mayor’s office recommended extreme caution when traveling in downtown Los Angeles, as the situation remains volatile and unpredictable.

This protest and related violence highlight ongoing societal tensions surrounding immigration policy in the United States, particularly in metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, which have seen an uptick in opposition to federal immigration enforcement efforts. Waymo’s self-driving taxis, which began operating in the city in November, have become frequent targets for vandalism amid this broader context of unrest.

As the city recovers from the events of the day, both law enforcement and community leaders are focused on restoring order while addressing the underlying issues that fueled the protests. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding immigration policy and its impact on local communities.
