With a record of 47-16, Tennessee looks to carry their momentum forward against Texas in pursuit of the championship series.

TULSA, Oklahoma – The Tennessee Volunteers softball team triumphed over the UCLA Bruins 5-4 in a thrilling elimination game at the Women’s College World Series on Tuesday night. The hard-fought battle concluded dramatically in the bottom of the ninth inning when Laura Mealer hit a walk-off single to right field, allowing Taylor Pannell to score the winning run.

With this victory, Tennessee has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, where they will face Texas. To reach the championship series, the Volunteers need to win two games against Texas. The outcome of this game marks the end of UCLA’s season, as they exit the tournament with their final record for the year.

The game was not without drama, particularly in the seventh inning when UCLA’s Megan Grant hit a home run that tied the game at 4-4. However, the situation became controversial as replays showed that Grant appeared to miss touching home plate during her celebration moment with teammates. Virginia’s coaching staff challenged the play, leading to a review by the umpires. They ultimately ruled that the home run would count, stating that while Grant needed assistance touching home plate, this support from her teammate was not subject to review according to NCAA regulations.

The tension increased as Tennessee had previously built a 4-2 lead before Grant’s key homer brought the game to extra innings. Mealer’s earlier performance was pivotal for Tennessee; she contributed two RBIs in the first inning, setting a strong foundation for the Volunteers. Karlyn Pickens also delivered an impressive pitching performance, throwing all nine innings and striking out seven UCLA batters.

In addition to Grant’s home run, UCLA’s Alexis Ramirez and Sofia Mujica also contributed power to their lineup with homers during the match. Despite these efforts, UCLA fell short, resulting in an unfortunate end to their campaign at the Women’s College World Series.

The win improves Tennessee’s overall record for the season to 47-16, showcasing their resilience and determination in what has been a challenging tournament. As the Volunteers prepare for their semifinal matchup against Texas, both teams are focused on securing a spot in the championship series, with Tennessee’s recent performance against UCLA providing the momentum they hope to carry forward.

This year’s Women’s College World Series has been filled with excitement, competitive matchups, and moments of contention, reflecting the high stakes and passion that characterize collegiate softball.

As the tournament progresses, fans will be eager to see how Tennessee navigates their path to the championship, with their focus now shifting toward Texas and the challenges that lie ahead.
