The National Automobile Dealers Association has voiced support for the Senate measure, emphasizing the need for a national consensus on vehicle regulations. However, there are growing concerns regarding California’s capability to support the expected surge in electric vehicle demand, particularly in light of the state’s ongoing challenges with power supply during heat waves. There are approximately 84,000 public electric vehicle chargers in California, with a goal of reaching 1.2 million by 2030. The previous Trump administration had directed states to halt funding for electric vehicle infrastructure projects launched under Biden.

In addition to California, eleven states and Washington, D.C., have adopted the goal of phasing out new gas-powered vehicles, although some states are reconsidering these commitments. Vermont’s governor has paused enforcement of electric vehicle sales targets, claiming the timeline is unrealistic, while Delaware’s governor is advocating for the recission of their electric vehicle mandate.

As Congress deliberates, Republican lawmakers, including Senator Thune, caution that California’s ambitious plans may impose excessive burdens on the state’s electric grid. While experts suggest that many local areas might theoretically manage increased EV charging demands, there are valid concerns about the potential for local infrastructure to become overloaded.
