The No. 3-seed UCLA men’s golf team opened the NCAA Auburn Regional with a strong performance, finishing second after the first round on May 12, 2025. The team shot a total score of 5-under 283, providing a solid foundation as they compete for a coveted spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
The Auburn men’s golf team leads the tournament with an impressive 13-under 275. Following UCLA in the rankings are the Georgia Tech team, which sits in third place with a score of 4-under 284, and SMU in fourth place with a score of 2-under 286. Meanwhile, Purdue, Texas A&M, and New Mexico State are tied for fifth place at even par (288).
The NCAA Auburn Regional features 13 teams vying for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled to take place at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, from May 23-28. The top five teams from the regional, as well as the lowest individual score not part of an advancing team, will qualify for the championships.
During the first round, players faced mid-afternoon weather delays, impacting the flow of the tournament. Fortunately for UCLA, four of its five golfers were able to complete their rounds before the delays occurred.
UCLA’s standout performer was senior Omar Morales, who finished the round with a score of 3-under 69, which included four birdies and one bogey, ranking him 5th on the individual leaderboard. Senior Pablo Ereño also had a strong showing, shooting 2-under 70, placing him tied for 6th. Freshman Baylor Larrabee completed the round at 1-under 71, tying for 10th place. The Bruins’ sophomore Luke Powell shot 1-over 73, ranking him tied for 31st, while junior Kyle An carded a score of 3-over 75, placing him tied for 55th.
Rounds two and three of the NCAA Auburn Regional are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. UCLA’s lineup consists of two seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and one freshman, with Trevor Garus as the substitute. The team plans to utilize Saturday’s practice round to refine its strategy and game plan for navigating the course effectively.
The UCLA men’s golf team has had a mix of successes and challenges in recent NCAA tournaments. In the previous season, they competed in the NCAA Regional but finished in 7th place. Historically, the Bruins have a strong legacy in collegiate golf, having won two NCAA Championships in 1988 and 2008, along with five NCAA Regional Championships.
The tournament format includes six 54-hole regional competitions that are critical in determining which teams and individuals will qualify for the NCAA Championships. With the UCLA men’s golf team currently in a strong position after the first round, they will be focused on maintaining their momentum in the upcoming rounds to secure a place in the NCAA Championships.
