News Summary

A team from North Hollywood High School has earned 3rd place at the National Science Bowl competition, showcasing their scientific skills among top schools in the nation. Competing against over 65 teams, they qualified for the national event by winning the regional competition. Their achievement highlights the importance of STEM education, supported by the L.A. Department of Water and Power. The team’s performance reflects their dedication and the resources provided by their school, promising a bright future for its members in science and technology.

North Hollywood, CA – A five-member student team from North Hollywood High School has achieved an impressive 3rd place at the National Science Bowl competition held on April 28, 2025, in Washington, D.C. This national contest, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, featured over 65 top high school teams from across the country, showcasing exceptional scientific and technological knowledge.

The North Hollywood team consisted of students Connor Chang, Mingao Guo, Charles Huang, Suzuko Ohshima, and Connor Zhao. Their qualification for the national event was secured through a victory in the local Regional Science Bowl, which took place on March 8, 2025. The local competition was organized by the L.A. Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and was open to public, private, and parochial schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District. Approximately 40 high school teams participated in this regional challenge.

Officials from LADWP noted the North Hollywood team’s extraordinary scientific knowledge and teamwork during the national competition, which used a game-show format. The format required competitors to answer questions covering college-level math, science, and technology, making the competition both challenging and intellectually stimulating.

North Hollywood High School’s team performance placed them behind Montgomery Blair High School from Maryland, which won the championship, and Lexington High School from Massachusetts, which secured 2nd place. Both of the top teams received $5,000 for their respective schools’ science departments, while the top 16 teams, including North Hollywood, received $1,000 each, further supporting their school’s commitment to science education.

Xavier Chavez, assistant principal at North Hollywood High School, praised the students’ achievements, emphasizing their potential for future competitions and academic success. The students are part of the school’s highly gifted magnet program, which is known for nurturing students with exceptional talents and interests in advanced subjects.

The National Science Bowl has been a significant event since its inception in 1991, drawing participation from over 325,000 students nationwide. The competition serves as an important platform for encouraging interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, which is critical for future workforce development.

In line with its commitment to promoting STEM education, the LADWP has actively supported educational initiatives such as the Science Bowl. The organization recognizes the importance of equipping future generations with the necessary skills to thrive in a technology-driven world.

Overall, the achievements of the North Hollywood High School team at both the regional and national levels reflect their hard work and dedication to academic excellence in science education. As the team looks ahead to future competitions, their success stands as a testament to the support and resources provided by their school and community.
